Zipper Wax and Conditioner

Cleaning and conditioning are the primary ways to insure a long life of your zipper tape and sliders. For many years we have recommended bees wax for the conditioning. Unfortunately it is a bit more difficult to apply than this Carnuba wax applicator. This wax is made in Japan.

Cleaning: Always clean dirt and mud from a ride ASAP. A least once a year clean your zipper wih water and an old toothbrush if needed. Check to make sure that no thread or other ditritus has infultrated the zipper teeth. Allow to dry before conditioning.

Zipper Wax: Apply to dry and clean product. Push down with the appilcator to prime the zipper. Next rub along zipper, allow  dolop before each slider head and run over it with the slider a few times working the wax inside. Allow to dry 4-5 minutes.

QUICK ZIPPER REPAIR

Since the introduction of the Ideal melted loop zipper on Jandd packs thirty years ago, we seem to have virtually eliminated zipper blow-outs. Occasionally, we have people who use their packs so much that they actually wear out the zipper heads. How can you tell if your zipper head is worn out? If you zip the pack shut and the zipper spreads open on its own, right behind the head, you have a worn out zipper head. The quick-fix field repair is simple: pull the zipper head to the full open position, then lightly squeeze the rear of the head together, top to bottom, with a pair of pliers. Take care not to over-tighten, as you will destroy the zipper tape. This should allow the zipper to close properly again for a few more months.
